  • Love Skip James … these recordings came out remastered when I was in college. I used to play them with the windows open.

    Hard Time Killing Floor Blues, by Skip James (1931). In the infancy of this blog (two years ago or so) I posted standard-quality mp3 songs. I’m going to the East Coast for a few days this month, and I decided to try to keep up by re-posting some of those tunes in HQ.

    James recorded for Paramount in 1931, only to see the Depression kill his sales. He was rediscovered a few years before his 1969 death, and the only real money he ever made in his lifetime from music was when Cream covered his “I’m So Glad.” Like Robert Johnson later, on songs like “Hellhound On My Trail,” James did much of his guitar work in open D tuning.
